Many roads once closed due to the current flood in Watseka, Illinois are now open. On Thurs, January 10, 2008, Mayor John Weidert declared the city in a State Of Emergency as firefighters and police evacuated residents. With a population of 5,500 approximately 550 of them were evacuated from their homes along with several pets.
Prior to the flood the ground had been frozen from the recent snow. A sudden rise in temperature over a 24 hour period of time melted piles of snow. Unfortunately shortly after the snow melted thunderstorms hit and it rained for hours. With the ground still frozen and the Kankakee river meeting our Iroquois river, the water had nowhere to run to...it ran here. The river ran over so quickly residents had little time to prepare, move vehicles, or remove belongings. For some residents, like myself, the flood had no affect on our personal belongings, but a huge affect on our hearts.
As the flood waters receded some folks found that the water did not reach the inside of their homes, but many others were not as fortunate. If you are able to contribute, whether it be clothing, non-perishable foods, help in clean up, or donations...please go to http://www.wgfaradio.com/ for more information. There are also many pictures of the flood posted there.
